little white coffin

little white coffin

My sweet boy,
   today your Dad and I
Did something no parent
   should ever have to do
Today, Mommy and Daddy
   had to bury you

I beheld the finality of your little white coffin
   so small, just like you
Covered in flowers to honor you

I broke at the sight, a shadow of the light
that was your presence in our lives

The weather was perfect, just like you
How was it the sun could shine so bright
      when my sunshine
         was you?

The LORD gave you your wings
He set you free,
   so you could fly
yet, my heart was not ready
   to say goodbye
I told you today, it's not goodbye forever
   only see you later

Mommy made a promise
   she will always come back
      to visit you

I may not come everyday
   as I did
   while you were
   in the NICU

Where you are
   You are at peace
      You don't need
         intensive care
            anymore

no more nurses
no more procedures
   you are healed

For you to be fully healed,
   Mommy's heart had to break

I can't pretend
   to understand
      why

Someday, Carter Matthew,
By the grace of God,
I will be there
   to meet you
   in the sky

Haley
